Is your refrigerator secure?
No, we're not kidding. Technology has advanced to the point where previously simple appliances have the possibility of connecting to one another through your network. This is called the Internet of Things (IoT).
While this opens the door for some helpful innovations, (imagine using your phone to start brewing your morning coffee before even leaving your bed!), it also allows for previously inconceivable security risks.
Last Friday, there was a security breach targeting Dyn, a large domain name server. This attack caused a nation-wide internet outage taking down many major websites including Twitter, Spotify, The New York Times, and PayPal. Thankfully Dyn was able to get back up and running a few hours later, but it's an attack that could've been avoided with the right security protocol.
According to security intelligence company, Flashpoint, the attack was enabled by hacking into connected home and office devices. The hacking tool took advantage of weak security protocols of IoT, attacking mostly DVRs and Security cameras.
